Public doctrine

Stranger is the wild card of the Eight. Its priestly board changes more often than the others'. Its sigil is rewritten every year. Its festival, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, is the most chaotic on the city's calendar. Tsim Sha Tsui — the tourist face of the city, the ferry terminal, the hotels — is its strongest neighborhood, and Stranger is the House most willing to take on people the other seven would not.

Private disposition

Stranger's actual interests are unclear, even to its own contractors. Its priestly board is composed entirely of people with complicated origins. It is the most diverse, in every sense, of the Eight. It is also the House the other seven trust least, partly because the others' fixed forms make Stranger's deliberately changeable form difficult to read.

Stranger is the House for half-people, mixed people, people who are from somewhere else and from here. Nadia is Stranger-contracted because Stranger was the only House that would have her, and she likes that about Stranger. The Stranger priesthood does not, on the whole, ask their contractors to be what they are not.

What remains mysterious

Stranger’s actual interests are one of the bible’s deliberate unknowns. The other seven Houses have legible domains. Stranger’s domain — newcomers, outsiders, the unannounced — is genuinely strange. What it wants is not settled here, and the stories will not settle it.
