The wound

What she did on Threshold’s behalf eight years ago. The bible should not specify it. The crew doesn’t know. Min suspects. The reader will learn slowly.

The longing

To have done less harm with the years she’s already lived. To do less harm with the years she has left. She knows this is a frame of mind, not a solvable problem. She has accepted that the frame is permanent.

Skills

Trauma surgery, modder-clinic work, emergency medicine, Threshold contract law (she could practice if she wanted to; she doesn’t), four spoken languages. She is also unexpectedly good at chess and at reading children. She does not display these skills; the crew has mostly figured them out by accident.

Relationships within the crew

  • With Min — the only crew member who treats Min as fully adult. Min loves her for it.
  • With Jin — she addresses him formally; he reciprocates. They have an understanding that does not require many words.
  • With Faan — deference, mutual.
  • With Nadia — deep silent recognition. Two women who have lost.
  • With Bo — she is the closest thing to an aunt he has. She would die for him and would prefer that not become necessary.

Series arc

Threshold will ask her to come back. She’ll have to refuse in a way that doesn’t end the crew. The thing she did eight years ago will surface — the person it was done to has surviving family, and they have not forgotten. The crew will learn what their elder has been carrying. The question of whether the crew can hold what she’s been carrying alone is a parallel to Min’s arc, and the resonance is intentional.
